A flower garden in your lawn can provide relaxation, fun, and
a creative outlet. Here are the usual steps for planting a flower or
vegetable garden for personal enjoyment as opposed to commercial profit.
First, mark off the area where you want to make the garden. You can
stake poles and link them with string to keep the kids from playing in
that area. In March or April, use your cultivator, a spade, or a hoe to
work the soil and break up clumps of earth as well as find and remove
stones or tree roots, along with other debris.
Next, add nutrients to your soil if needed. An associate at your local
lawn and garden center can tell you if you need to buy plant food or
nitrogen additives for enriching the soul. You may need to water it if
the weather has been unusually dry over the winter.
Then, prepare your seedlings or plants. You may have grown these
yourself over the winter or you can buy them new at the garden center.
Decide which plants you will use and where to place them in
juxtaposition to each other to prevent potential crossbreeding or
contamination.
Finally, after planting the flowers or vegetable seeds or seedlings,
water them with adequate moisture. Then check for weeds every couple of
days and remove these promptly. You also may want to put up a scarecrow
or fence to keep out unwanted animals or pests. Look for non-toxic
pesticides or substances that will repel insects and prevent blight.
When the plants bloom you will enjoy the fruits of your labor. All the
work that you put into creating and protecting your garden will finally
seem worthwhile. At the end of the season, remove dead foliage and
prune back the plants to the basic stem that is close to the ground.
When the next planting season comes, you will be ready to start
again.
