Wild Flowers
Hiking in the woods or through a pasture is exciting and
relaxing at the same time. On one hand, you may have an unexpected
encounter with a deer or pheasant, creating pleasant little goose bumps
on your arms from the face-to-face meeting with nature. On the other
hand, few things nurture the human spirit, especially one that is
troubled or fatigued, as fully as an hour of communion with nature in
the wild on a beautiful day.
One of the special sights that make this experience so meaningful is
the appearance of various types of wild flowers along the way. From
daisies to dandelions, nature’s colors and scents offer a delightful
reprieve from everyday traffic and stacks of paperwork. Touch-me-nots
pop off their stems with a gentle tap from human fingers. Queen Anne’s
lace waves regally in the breeze like a monarch greeting the crowd
while on parade.
Of course, you need to be careful when touching unknown plants, as they
may be lethal with effects like those observed after handling poison
ivy. Or you may be allergic to some plants, which could cause reactions
like hives, watery eyes, or a runny nose.
You should avoid picking wildflowers unless you take just a few and
leave plenty for other travelers to enjoy. These beautiful plants look
best in their natural habitat, and even though they grace a living room
table or kitchen counter with natural charm, they are most appreciable
on their stems.
Before taking your next hike, go to the library and get a book about
wild flowers. Find out about some of those that are native to your
area. The next time you head out to the fields or woodlands, see if you
can identify some of the plants you come across, and you are sure to
respect and appreciate them even more than before.
