Flower Delivery
A generation or two ago, young single men might call on their
prospective dates with a fresh bouquet of flowers in hand. They would
have stopped at the floral shop on their way to a young lady’s house
and picked out a lovely assortment of sweet-smelling blooms.
But nowadays that has all changed. A guy simply picks up the telephone
and orders whatever the florist thinks will fit the occasion. The
florist mails a bill or takes the customer’s credit card number over
the phone. The young man will never see the arrangement that his girl
will receive, and she will not get to appreciate his thoughtfulness in
selecting just the right blooms. Everything is done electronically.
But not the flower delivery. This part is still handled the old
fashioned way, with an employee driving a floral delivery truck and
pulling up to the young woman’s house. He will carry the flower
arrangement to her door and hand it to her in lieu of the young man,
perhaps his grandfather, for example, who would have filled this role
fifty years ago.
Floral delivery remains much the same as it has always been. The main
difference is in the rates charged for this service. As the price of
gas has gone up, so have floral delivery fees. But that is part of
everyday life.
Many florist shops can deliver your order the same day if you call
early enough. Some will call the intended recipient ahead of time to
make sure she will be there when he arrives with her bouquet or
planter. Often a floral associate will sign your name to a card you
will never see in advance and tuck it into your flowers before
delivering them.
Beautiful flowers will always be an expression of thoughtfulness and
affection. Isn’t it great that today’s florists still deliver their
quality products in a timely manner, thus providing more free time to
the rest of us who have important business to attend to?
